Finding travel accommodations is not nearly as arduous a task as it might have been in the years before the Internet. Try typing “accommodation” in a search engine and witness the millions of search results displayed. Therefore, if you are going to start from scratch, and you are using a search engine, you have to filter your results. Search South African sites only if you are searching for local accommodation and type in the name of the town as well. If you want to stay in a hotel, type “hotel” as well or, in similar vein, “guesthouse” or “B&B” or “self-catering”.
Even after all of this, you will still get plenty of results. Many of the results will be for portal websites that act like travel agents and give you access to accommodation options from a central point. Usually, you can book at hotels or guesthouses straight from these websites. However, if you want to take full advantage of an establishment’s cancellation policy or you want to see what their website looks like (to gauge their standards), look for their own homepage.
You need to decide what kind of travel accommodations you are looking for. A self-catering guesthouse in a restful residential area? A hotel close to the CBD of a city and to specific tourist attractions or businesses? A suite hotel, where you will stay for an extended period, which offers the comforts of an apartment?
If you are on a budget and you want to make the most of a holiday, do not spend too much on travel accommodations, because you only spend a certain percentage of your time in the hotel room anyway. A premier budget hotel with a three-star rating may offer the ideal compromise. It will offer most of the expected conveniences, like air conditioning, DSTV, coffee and tea facilities and various bed combinations, but at an eminently reasonable price. This leaves enough money to enjoy your vacation to the full.
