A multitude of travel hotels vie for the traveller’s attention and the selection process may not always be as straightforward as it seems. Star ratings do not mean the same things in all countries and on all continents and it seems fair to conclude that the one-star hotel represents the lowest hotel standards in a given country, while five-star usually represents the pinnacle. The South African Tourism Grading Council establishes South African star ratings for travel hotels. One-star establishment may be expected to offer “functional, acceptable” accommodation, furnishings and guest care. There might be a small breakfast included and there would be a towel and soap in the bathroom. Two-star hotels up the quality level from “acceptable” to “good”. The breakfast is now a full Continental and there is a hand as well as a bath towel in the bathroom.
A three-star hotel may represent a “sweet spot” in travel hotel lodgings, and many people find these to give the best compromise between comfort and cost. Furnishings and guest care is “very good” and guests could expect many breakfast options, including cooked meals. The bathroom is larger and better furnished, including shower soap and shampoo. Some three-star premium budget hotels go the extra mile and guarantee air conditioning and DSTV in the rooms as well.
Four-star hotels offer “excellent” guest care and furnishings and many breakfast options may be available, served over an extended period. Rooms are better furnished and would include a working area with a desk and guests can expect eighteen hours of room service availability per day. Bathroom amenities added, over a four-star hotel, include a shower cap, hair conditioner, body lotion, a bath sheet and even a face cloth.
The most lavish travel hotels carry a five-star rating for “exceptional” quality and service. Room service is available 24 hours and many breakfast options are served all day, even in rooms. Business facilities like fax and Internet are available, and there may even be health and beauty facilities on site.
