Where to Stay

If you are going to be away from home for a vacation or business trip, how do you choose your accommodation? Many different types of accommodation are available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. It is worth keeping these in mind when you select your lodging.

The first word that comes to mind is “hotel”, but this may be a somewhat deceptive term, in view of all the options that are available. If your party consists of no more than three people, a traditional hotel room with a double bed and single bed might suffice.

Many hotels only cater for three people per room and if you are four or more, you might want to consider a suite hotel, where the units are more like apartments than rooms. There are usually more bedrooms and even a lounge area and a proper, fully fitted kitchen. They are also more expensive, but on the positive side, you often pay per suite and not per person. Suite hotels are ideal for people who want extended-stay accommodation and they may offer preferential rates if you are staying for a significant period.

A guesthouse or Bed and Breakfast may offer flexible options too. Different layouts are offered for different numbers of guests and the homely setting may be considered preferable. Many are self-catering, which means that a smallish kitchenette is available for preparing your own meals. Some guesthouses are more like small homes, with separate rooms and a full kitchen, which may make them ideal for families.

Finally, motels (“motorists’ hotels”) offer most of the hotel features, but usually face a common area or parking lot, with all units accessible from outside. These are usually situated along main routes and are intended more for motorists who need to overnight before continuing their journeys.

Out of all these options, it is easy to choose where to stay, depending on the size of your party, the available budget and the purpose of your trip away from home.
